CMOS Motherboard – Definition and Types

Posted on

CMOS is one of the important components that a computer needs in order to function properly. The CMOS function is roughly used as a temporary storage memory that contains time settings and BIOS-related setups.

CMOS is also called Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor is a component that is often found in various modern computer devices. CMOS technology is a semiconductor technology (IC / Integrated circuit) used to make devices such as processors, various kinds of computer chips, DRAM and so on. CMOS generally has advantages where these components usually require very little power to operate compared to other types of semiconductor technology.

This is what makes CMOS the choice to use as information storage memory on the motherboard. With low resource use, the battery used can also last for a long time. Usually it reaches the age of many years.

Use of CMOS in Computers

To understand the use of CMOS in a previous computer, we must first understand the difference between BIOS and CMOS. BIOS and CMOS are often considered by most people to be the same thing and are one entity. But in reality these two types of components are not the same thing. The difference seen from these two components lies in the functions that exist in these two types of components. Although different these two components function very well and simultaneously support each other.

The chip in the BIOS contains a special program that helps the computer processor to interact and also control other computer devices. Other computer devices in question are hardware devices such as hard disks, video cards (video cards), sound cards (sound cards), network cards (network cards), USB ports and so on. The BIOS chip is located in various types of motherboards in general without exception.

Without the existence of the BIOS, the CPU will not know what actions need to be taken to be able to interact with other devices on the computer. The use of CMOS on the motherboard helps the computer to remember certain settings such as setting time, date and more even when the computer has been turned off and no more electricity is supplied to the computer.

CMOS ensures the computer does not forget the settings that have been made before so that every time the computer is turned on, the system from the BIOS will remember the configuration that was used before the computer was turned off. The information storage capacity that CMOS can store is very small and usually only consists of 64 bytes.

CMOS application

Specifically CMOS on most computers acts as a special RAM chip. In contrast to other types of RAM CMOS has its own resources in the form of a CMOS battery. This resource does not depend on the main resources available on the computer. So even though the main resources of the computer have been stopped, CMOS will still keep the data contained in this component.

To be able to stop the power source that is on the CMOS it can also be done by stopping electrical power sources that are connected with CMOS through CMOS batteries. By doing this, all information containing the settings and configuration on the computer related to the BIOS will be erased. This process is usually done to solve various problems related to the BIOS, including how to fix the onboard VGA that has a problem.

In addition to allowing you to change the time and date and settings for how other devices start at computer startup, CMOS configuration settings also allow you to enable and also disable various computer input and output devices including USB ports, video cards, sound cards, parallel ports and devices other inputs and outputs. Because CMOS is also integrated with the motherboard, the presence of problematic CMOS can indirectly be a feature of motherboard damage.

Types of CMOS

Please note that CMOS is part of the IC (Integrated Circuit). This means that CMOS has a structure that is not much different from IC. The types of CMOS are generally the same components as ICs which are usually different in their use. As one of the electronic technology parts, IC is widely used in various components of electronic devices of various types.

CMOS has other names that usually refer to its function as memory. CMOS is commonly referred to as Real-Time Clock (RTC), CMOS RAM, Non-Volatile RAM (NVRAM, Non-Volatile BIOS Memory, or Complementary symmetry metal oxide semiconductor (COS-MOS). Various names refer to one component This is no wonder many are confused to better understand CMOS further.

  1. TTL IC

TTL IC is one of the other types of electronic components that have a basis similar to CMOS. This component is a component that is usually found in the use of modern electronic devices. Many TTL ICs are also used in various digital circuits.

TTL IC, formed from a bipolar transistor system. Even when it is “Off”, electrical power can still flow through this device, and make this device consume more power and heat. However, on the other hand, devices with TTL IC components can carry out predetermined processes with more speed.

The use of IC has a relatively low voltage source, which only ranges from 4.75 V to 5.25 V. Unlike the CMOS IC the TTL IC component does not have the capacity to carry out information storage media such as RAM which can be done by CMOS ICs.

  1. CMOS IC

CMOS ICs are another type of CMOS electronic component. Between TTL IC and CMOS IC there is actually no difference that is seen significantly. Which makes the difference between the two types found in terms of their use.

CMOS ICs use a pair of MOSFET transistor systems in their internal circuits which consume very low power so that sometimes there is no power at all when they are “On” or Off “. Therefore, the energy consumption of energy and energy in CMOS is very low. This is one of the advantages that CMOS ICs have when compared to other types. With lower heat levels, this allows for the use of smaller internal transistors. In the end this will make the components inside more complex with more complex functions.

As explained in previous points, CMOS ICs can also be used as information storage media such as RAM. This use makes CMOS ICs used as one of the essential components of computer devices.

That was a discussion about the types of CMOS. See you again in the next discussion.
